Spirals of autumn leaves
Curl and twist in pale air
Around the blackbird on the path.
Feathers brush the dusty stone
And dance through prewinter decay,
And past and future are one, are present;
Sun and star, dust and snow
In his wings, contained.

Author's Comments

First writing assignment for Poetry Chapbook Workshop. Written after Wallace Stevens's "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird."

Could this passage work with a nightingale as well?
